Summary
Evolution Mining operates Cowal Gold Operations in NSW. Following the approval of the Open Pit Continuation (OPC) Project, the operation is expanding the existing E42 pit and developing three new satellite pits, extending mine life to 2042.
The Objective
Evolution Mining engaged IEMA to review and update a suite of environmental management plans to align with new approval conditions, project commitments, and future operational requirements as the OPC Project progressed.
A key focus was ensuring all management plans remained practical for day-to-day site use while maintaining consistency across documentation and meeting evolving regulatory expectations.
Our Response
IEMA worked closely with Evolution Mining’s environmental team to review and update key environmental management plans and strategies. Leveraging our detailed understanding of the site and approvals framework, we prepared plans including:
- Rehabilitation Strategy and Rehabilitation Management Plan
- Air Quality and Greenhouse Gas Management Plan
- Noise and Blast Management Plan
- Traffic Management Plan
- Hazardous Materials Management Plan
- Environmental Management Strategy, and
- Final Void Management Plan.
IEMA also engaged with regulators and stakeholders to ensure the plans aligned with approval requirements, while remaining clear, practical, and consistent for implementation by site personnel. This included facilitating workshops with key stakeholders, including the Community Consultative Committee, Environment Protection Authority, Councils, the Resources Regulator, and the Department of Planning, Housing, and Infrastructure.
The Impact
IEMA delivered a coordinated suite of management plans that aligned with approval requirements while remaining practical and user-friendly for site teams. The updated plans reflected current approval conditions, project commitments, and regulatory expectations for the OPC Project. This provided Evolution Mining with a clear and integrated framework to support ongoing environmental management across the expanded operation. By balancing compliance with practical implementation, the plans support operational performance and long-term regulatory confidence.
